Bio/Contact

James is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans surrealistic oil paintings, detailed pen and ink illustrations, and dynamic impressionistic pieces. Based in Arizona, his artistic journey began in childhood through frequent visits to the Art Institute of Chicago, where Georges Seurat's "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" left a lasting impression that continues to influence his approach to color and composition.

Drawing from early influences ranging from cartoon art and graffiti to High Renaissance masters including Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Bernini, James developed a distinctive visual language that synthesizes classical technique with contemporary sensibilities. This foundation was strengthened during high school under the mentorship of art teacher Mrs. Rudnick, who introduced him to oil painting and encouraged exploration across multiple mediums.

James's editorial illustration work earned national recognition, including a prestigious award at the 1996 National Student Press Association convention in Chicago, along with several regional illustration honors. This early success in journalism-related art established his ability to communicate complex ideas through visual narrative.

While pursuing studies in Exercise Science at Arizona State University, James continued developing his artistic practice, with surrealist influences becoming increasingly prominent in his work. This interdisciplinary background brings a unique analytical perspective to his creative process, informing both the conceptual depth and technical precision evident in his pieces. Beyond his artistic pursuits, James is an active entrepreneur with several inventions spanning health and wellness to consumer goods industries, demonstrating the same innovative thinking that characterizes his visual work.

James works primarily in oil on canvas for surrealistic compositions, pen and ink with colored pencil for illustrations, and employs spray paint, enamel, oil, and acrylic across his impressionistic works. His exhibition history includes shows at local Phoenix-area venues, coffee shops, restaurants, and art spaces throughout Tempe and Phoenix. He has sold dozens of original paintings, illustrations, and prints, and completed numerous commissions ranging from intimate portraits to large-scale surrealistic works, including a notable 4' × 8' piece. His impressionistic work "Autumn Forest" was gifted to professional football player Larry Fitzgerald in 2004. His design work extends to custom tattoo art, demonstrating versatility across both fine art and applied design applications.

Through his diverse body of work, James continues to explore the intersection of dreams and reality, drawing viewers into contemplative spaces where classical technique meets contemporary vision.
